EXCERPT:

WhenTheScoundrelSins2

“You look much more like your father now,” she commented, nervously licking her suddenly dry lips but only serving to draw his attention to her mouth. Which made her even more nervous, so nervous that she couldn’t stop the trembling of her fingertips as they wrapped into the skirt of her night rail. “But you’re still a troublemaker.”

A faint smile played at his mouth. “And you’re still a bluestocking,” he countered. Unintentionally simmering a slow heat low in her belly, he reached up to tuck a stray curl behind her ear. “Still retreating to the sanctuary of your library.”

“Because books are usually more pleasant than most people,” she answered, swallowing hard when he trailed his fingers down the side of her neck. She forced out, not at all as firmly as she’d hoped beneath the soft touch of his fingers,

“And more trustworthy.”

Ignoring that jab, he slid his hand lower to let his fingers play at the edge of her shawl. “Yet there are things that people can do that books can’t.” His fingers tugged gently at the shawl and pulled it down her shoulder to reveal the scooped neck of the nightdress beneath. His gaze flicked to the small patch of revealed skin at the base of her throat, then back to her eyes. “All kinds of interesting things.”

She should stop him, swat his hand away, shove him back—but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Just as she couldn’t hold back the hot shiver that swept through her or the gooseflesh that formed on her skin. His touch was proving to be as equally intoxicating now as that night six years ago.

“Then I have no interest in learning them,” she countered, although from the way her blood hummed, her body was very interested.

Madness—that after what he’d done to her, she could ever want to be in his arms again. Yet she desired just that, although that could never happen. Kissing him once had ruined her reputation. Kissing him again might destroy her entire future.

She thrust her chin into the air. “I know of your reputation.”

“Thank you,” he half purred.

His finger hooked beneath the wide shoulder strap of her sleeveless nightgown and slid it slowly down her arm. But this time, with a stretch of bare shoulder revealed to his eyes, he didn’t bother feigning propriety by looking away and instead flamed a prickling heat beneath her skin everywhere he gazed.

She pulled in a deep breath to steady herself. Oh, why did she always go light-headed when she was alone with him?

“That was not meant as a compliment.”

“Wasn’t it?”

REVIEW: This is the second book in Anna Harrington’s new regency series Capturing the Carlisle’s, about three Carlisle brothers, rakes who become respectable after family tragedy, and in it we follow the story of Quinn Carlisle and Annabelle Greene.

As with the first book in this series, I found myself once more torn about the story because there are parts that I liked and then parts that were disappointing. But if I had to say if I liked it overall, I have to be honest and say that I did.

I liked the heroine and her spunk, although at times, I wanted to give her a “talking to”.

As for Quinn, who was a third son in their family, I found him likable despite his past indiscretions. It was  easy to understand his motives and ambition of making something of himself. I also understood the reasons for him not accepting that love is real.

Together these two made an interesting couple and an exciting second chance at love story.

As usual, Ms. Harrington did an awesome job in giving me a glimpse of the Scottish setting, some great secondary characters  and plenty of humor.

TEASER for The Scot Says I Do by Sabrina York

“So you want to marry me because I am better disposed to tolerate your unrefined manners?” She was teasing him now, but frankly, he deserved it.

His face went ruddy and he began to sputter.

“Or because I can converse with you on lower subjects, such as offal and breeding?”

“Catherine!”

“Or is it—”

“Stop.”

TEASER for A Midsummer Wedding by May McGoldrick

“I feel no sense of duty toward the agreement binding us together. That deal was made decades ago, and both families have already profited by it. And in return for my freedom, I’ll provide a sizable sum of gold for you to do with as you please.”

“You don’t want to marry me?”

“Blast me if I do. You don’t want to marry me, and I don’t want to marry you either,” he responded, looking like he’d just won the prize pig at the fair. “You can choose anyone you please, so long as it’s not Alexander Macpherson.”

REVIEW: You know the saying “You had me at HELLO.”, right? Well, this anthology had me at Lecia, Anna, May and Sabrina, not to mention SCOT!

All four stories are well written and each was unique in its own way. And the steam level in all four is way up there! For hot and sensual, this is the read not be missed.

From Lecia we were introduced to an interesting take on Princess and the Pea and if you love your romance to have a heart, sensuality and intrigue, you’ll fall in love with Cait and Alex.

Anna brings us a second chance in love trope with a pair of characters that will need a lot of patience with each other in order for that love to blossom to its full bloom.

May’s story was so much fun to read. I mean, LOL funny moments and situations. I adored these two and their “dance” to happily ever after was entertaining and intriguing to read.

Sabrina tells the tale of Duncan and Catherine, a couple that had known each other for ever and ever, but years apart puts them at a disadvantage. They needed outside elements to bring them closer together and a truly despicable villain. But have no fear, fast pace and witty dialogue moves this tale to its happy ending.

TEASER:

Her eyes narrowed as she took in that bit of dubious advice and contemplated what he asked of her, with a curious look of deep study and concentration. For a moment, her expression was damnably disconcerting as she tried to think up a compliment to give him, as if she had never truly noticed him before as a man. Which inexplicably irked him to no end. How could she have not noticed him before as someone other than the Duke of Trent, other than just a friend?

dukedemands-forever-sharegraphic02

“What you’re asking of me is impossible.” She shook her head with a soft sigh of defeat. “Every man in this room knows the rank you hold, the power and influence you’re gaining in Parliament. As for the ladies, you should have seen the way they all watched you when you crossed the room to ask me to dance.” She shrugged. “What could I possibly add to what everyone has already told you about how wonderful you are?”

He stared at her, momentarily stunned speechless. What she’d just said was exactly the kind of compliment a man wanted to hear from a beautiful woman . . .

And he didn’t believe a word of it. When he saw her lips twitch with amusement, his eyes narrowed. “You are incorrigible.”

She laughed happily. “Perhaps.” Her eyes shined, and for a brief moment, she shifted closer, somehow rising up on tiptoes as she danced to bring her mouth close to his ear. “But it is all true, you know.”

dukedemands-forever-sharegraphic01

Then she pulled back into her original position and looked at him shyly through lowered lashes even as the tip of her tongue darted out to wet her lips. The paradoxical effect of innocent seduction was mesmerizing, and for a moment, he forgot they were dancing in the middle of a crowded ballroom. For a moment, there was only Miranda. And the pull of her was undeniable.

REVIEW: This is the first book in Anna Harrington’s new regency series Capturing the Carlisle’s, about three Carlisle brothers, rakes who become respectable after family tragedy, and the first story pairs Miranda Hodgkins and the eldest brother, Sebastian Carlisle.

I am torn about this story because there are aspects of it that I liked and then there are some that just rubbed me the wrong way.

The first thing that I couldn’t wrap my head around is Miranda’s actions to seduce a man she adored since her childhood. I never got over the fact that she thought this could work.

As for Sebastian, it took me awhile to warm up to him, and in the end I did, but when these two were together, I only saw sparks. I just didn’t feel them. Their attraction for each other took forever to be accepted by the two and I wished it didn’t take that long.

What I did like a lot is the setting, secondary characters  and humor.

TEASER:

And while the old lord was away, the young lord would play… or at least that had been his plan. To fill his daylight hours with as many frivolous activities as possible and his nights however- and whomever- he could. But it was deuced hard when the staff followed his every move. For heaven’s sake, yesterday morning he’d caught Cook spying on him to make certain he ate breakfast!

Most likely their close attention came at his mother’s orders. He would have found her concern endearing if it didn’t aggravate the hell out of him. And it was damned grating that nearly everyone he interacted with these days- including the household staff- still thought of him as fragile. Still not fully recovered. Broken.

REVIEW ONE: Chatham House, Mayfair London – 1817

Thomas Matteson, Lord Chesney, Marquess of Chesney, has been staying at Chatham House while his parents are at their other home. Thomas sustained a bullet wound to his hip a year ago which took a long time to heal. Even with his background as an operative for the War Office, his injury has left him with panic attacks and the inability to sleep well. But when he receives a missive from Earl Bathurst, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, saying that Thomas is unfit for service, he is devastated.

Then Thomas receives a request from Earl Royston of Blackwood Hall to use his special skills to investigate some highway robberies near his estate. If Thomas stops the robberies at Blackwood Hall, Earl Royston will put in a good word with Earl Bathurst for Thomas to which he agrees. Thus, Thomas leaves for a house party at Blackwood Hall to begin his investigations.

Josephine (Josie) Carlisle, age 23, is attending the house party at Blackwood Hall. The Carlisle family are neighbors to the Roystons. The daughter of a Baron, Josie is actually an adopted orphan. Adopted at age 6 by Richard and Elizabeth Carlisle, she has dedicated herself to do all she can to help the orphans at the Good Hope Orphanage. The older she gets, the more she realizes she is probably remain unwed as she is passed over because she was an adopted orphan.

The Carlisles have 3 sons of their own and as Elizabeth was unable to have more children, they decided to adopt a daughter. She has always been loved and treated as their true daughter.

When Josie glimpses Thomas at the house party, she is very intrigued by this handsome man. After a waltz, they are immediately attracted to one another.

As Josie helps out at the Orphanage she vows to do all she can to make life better for the orphans. She does not like Mrs. Potter who runs the Orphanage. The woman works for Lord Royston and does whatever he tells her to do. She also steals money and beats the children. When Thomas sees her with the orphans, he is quite intrigued by Josie and her ability to comfort people. Just being around her relaxes him.

When the highway robberies continue, Thomas lies in wait and follows the robber. What he finds leaves him shocked and confused whether to arrest the perpetrator or not.

The stubbornness of Thomas and Josie became grating at times but it only added to the angst of the characters.

I enjoyed this story and I know others will as well.

REVIEW TWO: The Secret Life of Scoundrels series ends with a story of a hero that is a bit complex, yet charming and a heroine who is his perfect match.

I liked the repartee and the chemistry between these two and the fast pace of the story made this book easy to read.

If you haven’t had a chance to read this series, I highly recommend you do so. This third story was a perfect ending to the series.

‘Dukes Are Forever’ by Anna Harrington

daf ahSTORY: All’s fair in love…

Battlefields and barrooms hold much more interest for Edward Westover, Duke of Swarthmore, than a little girl’s fondness for dolls and lace. When he takes possession of his enemy’s estate, everything that villain held dear—including his daughter—belongs to Edward. Hire a governess, arrange a dowry, give a few reassurances, and be off on his way—that’s Edward’s plan. But he’s in for the shock of his life. For his new ward is a beautiful, impetuous, and utterly irresistible woman…

…and War

Kate Benton is stunned. Who is this arrogant, infuriating man who’s invited himself into her home and taken over her life? Her vow: to do everything in her power to convince him to leave her—and Brambly House—alone. Yet as chilly days melt into sultry nights, Kate sees glimpses of kindness underneath Edward’s cool façade . . . and a passionate nature that takes her breath away. There’s so much she doesn’t know about this man. But does she dare trust this devilish duke with her heart?

REVIEW: London – 1815

Colonel Edward Westover, the Duke of Strathmore, is focused on ruining Phillip Benton who was responsible for the deaths of his brother and sister-in-law in a carriage accident. Benton was very drunk when his carriage ran into theirs killing them instantly. Since then, Edward has sought revenge by taking everything Benton has, including his daughter, Katherine. Benton lost a gambling game to Edward which gave him control of Katherine’s home and made him her guardian.

The home is quite bare from her father selling off everything he could get his hands on for ready cash for his gambling. The home had been left to Katherine by her now deceased mother. There are just a few old retainers left to help run the home.

Katherine has always had an interest in medicine and has become a great help to surrounding people who cannot afford a doctor. Her methods are modern and she is a great believer in cleanliness.

When Edward arrives at her home, he finds a grown woman and not a child as he had expected. He immediately tells her that he will control everything, including her. Losing control of her independence she has grown used to, grates heavily on her.

Seeing the sparse ways in which she has been living, Edward hires a new estate agent who quickly arranges for new furnishings and food to fill the larder. In addition, he gives generous pensions to the old retainers which will allow them to retire.

Edward tells Katherine that if she disobeys him, he will retract the pensions for the old retainers and send her to his home estate.

Their initial animosity toward one another soon sparks into an almost animal magnetism which results in passion. But Edward cannot let go of his bossy ways so when Katherine angers him again, he sends her to his desolate estate, Greymoor, hoping to break her.

Is there any hope for this relationship? Can two very stubborn people come together to form a bond?

This story had promise but I did not like Edward. I kept hoping this control freak would learn to let go of his need for dominance, but he doesn’t. Katherine irritated me because she accepts this. If you like the ‘caveman dragging the woman by the hair to the cave scenario” this book is for you.
