BOOK BLURB: A Stranger’s Smile

Christmas may be coming to Linavar, but Temperance Menzie is far from joyful. Grief-stricken over the death of her father at the hands of the Black Riders, she almost didn’t see the wounded stranger in the woods. And Temperance won’t rest until she uncovers it . . .

A Lover’s Kiss

EXCERPT:

She stopped walking and pulled on his hand to stop him as well. “Who am I to you?”

What? What had he said? He realized quickly enough, scowled, and then smiled, giving in to what his heart was telling him. “Ye are—” He paused, not truly sure what to say. He hadn’t wanted to care for her, but he did. He’d let her in, but how could he have denied her entrance? She’d been through much, thanks to him, and yet she still smiled, she still sang, she still had compassion to help him heal.

He began again, reaching for her. He pulled her closer and wrapped his arms around her plaid- encased body, shielding her from the wind. “Ye are my candle in the dark.” He stopped again to take her in. He smiled. “I’m better at puttin’ a quill to m’ words than I am at speakin’ them.”

Her wide, beautiful eyes glittered like the snow dusting the braes. He wanted to lose himself there in the expectant hope that lit her gaze.

“You’re doing just fine,” she assured him softly. “Continue, please.”

He shoved aside everything on his mind but her. What was left scared the hell out him. “I canna—”

She waited in silence while he fought his demon for her. Her hope began to fade to disappointment.

It made him smile to think her hope was to be with him and she was waiting to hear him tell her.

“I canna take my gaze from ye, lass. No matter what I’m doin’, m’ eyes find their way back to yer rich dark hair fallin’ over yer flawless jaw, the relaxed curl of your bottom lip that tempts my legs to bring me to wherever ye are. I lay awake at night imaginin’ yer soft inhalations of breath. They fill my heart with something other than mortar and fury. I want to bring ye to me but I’m unworthy of yer dreams. Still, I want to be in them, as ye are in mine.”

“You see?” she said breathlessly. “Just fine.” She closed her eyes and parted her lips when he dipped his head to hers.

He moved his mouth over hers, basking in the intimacy of kissing her, capturing her short, eager breaths. His senses came alive and he used each one of them to fill himself with her. She tasted like passion and innocence. When he slipped his tongue over hers, she opened her arms and coiled them around his neck, covering them both in his plaid. He listened to her heart beating like ancient drums. Or was it his own heart he was hearing? He withdrew a hairbreadth so he could look at her again. The sight of her dreamy-eyed and wanting more nearly drove him mad. He brushed his nose across her temple to her hair, drinking in the scent of her, like the familiar fragrance of peat and pine. “Ye’re bringin’ me back to life, lass.”

He kissed her again, barely holding back the passion raging inside him to be released.

REVIEW: By now I know what Paula Quinn can do. She continues to impress with her storytelling and I’m always ready for her to take me into the Scotland of long ago and introduce me to these intriguing and voluptuous characters that are fully fleshed out and real.

This is the first book in Highland Heirs series which continues the MacGregor and Grant family tales. If you’ve never read any of those books, have no fear because this story can definitely be read as stand alone.

Cailean Grant is a complex and complicated man who tends to get himself in some dire situations, and that’s how he meets Temperance Menzie, a woman that is his destiny. Both characters were well developed and the plot was as complex as our hero and heroine!

It is the emotional journey that these two went through made my eyes mist and that doesn’t happen often to this reader.

If you’ve never read this author and you love to read romances with Scottish politics, men in kilts, and a romance that brings tears to your eyes, this one is a must.

He withdrew only enough to break their kiss and laughed softly against her lips. “Here, las,” his sensual sorcerer’s voice drifted deep into her soul. “Like this.”

Slipping his hand behind her nape, he tilted her head to take him at a better angle. He snatched away her breath again, covering her mouth with his in an intoxicating combination of tenderness and strength. He parted her lips gently and slid his tongue inside her.

Her nipples grew tight and hard against the confines of her gown.

Just a flick across the darkest recesses of her mouth and then gone again, over and over, devouring her until she groaned as something hot and tight twisted her innards and between her legs.

But this was no time to cower at the power he possessed. She was no mouse and followed his lead, doing what he did, matching his ardor with an unleashed passion of her own.

When his kisses fell to her throat, she tossed back her head and growled… No, that wasn’t her.

It was Gascon.

REVIEW: With this book, Highland Heirs series is now on the fourth installment and as the previous three, I loved it a lot, possibly making this one my favorite of the four and the reason for it was the heroine, Emma.

What a wonderful character she was!

She is one fierce and fiercely independent woman; an intelligent and capable healer and beautiful from within as much as out.

And then there’s Malcolm! I loved the complexity of his character. This was not your run of the mill Highland hero. He was flawed; stubborn and arrogant, yet honorable. But what made him so endearing to me was his honesty with himself. Like I said, this is one very complicated man.

As for the chemistry between these two? It was off the charts!

If you’re in the mood for a fast paced, well plotted and written Highland adventure with two very complex and entertaining protagonists, you need to read this story.

‘To Desire a Highlander’ by Sue-Ellen Welfonder

tdah sewSTORY: An Unwilling Bride

Proud, passionate Lady Gillian MacGuire is known as the Spitfire of the Isles. She can take care of herself and hasn’t yet met a man who could impress her . . . especially not Donell MacDonnell, the odious older man she was promised to five years ago. She’s been dreading his return, but when her intended comes back to claim her, she’s stunned at how different he seems. The man she swore she would spurn forever now invades her thoughts, her dreams, and her heart.

An Unexpected Desire

When Roag agrees to assume the identity of the recently deceased MacDonnell chieftain, no one warns him that the man was betrothed. As a member of the King’s Fenris Guard, he is oath-bound to embark on whatever mission the crown gives him. Of course, he was expecting a battle—not a bride. Yet after sharing one kiss with Lady Gillian, the powerful Highlander becomes the one seduced and captivated. Now giving in to temptation could ruin them both.

REVIEW: Let me tell you, after I read the blurb, I honestly didn’t think this plot would work. I mean the hero is taking someone else’s identity! This can only go bad, right?! Wrong. I was so wrong. It all worked out unbelievably well, and I should have known better than to question Sue-Ellen’s power of plotting a tale that is passionate and fun.

As usual Sue-Ellen enchants her readers not just with a well told tale of love and woo, but what I find fascinating is that she never fails to paint me a picture of that long ago time in Scotland’s history by giving me a taste of the life her characters lived day in and day out.

With some intriguing and entertaining twists and turns, combined with plenty of humor, she weaves this beautiful love story to any romance lover’s satisfaction.

If you’re still in that dreaded #Droughtlander mode, you need to pick this one up!

TEASER:

She braced her legs, setting her boots firmly on the ground, and lifted her chin. She knew her defiance was born mainly from the sheer strength and power coming toward her. These men were escorts, nothing more. She didn’t want their first impression of her to be that she was a sniveling woman afraid of them just because they were English. She was born of a long line of warriors. Her first instinct was to defend. She understood only too well that her country was being conquered slowly but surely by the English, perhaps even by the very men who trampled the delicate heather beneath the hooves of their stallions as they approached.

“The queen sends only four men to guard my daughter when she crosses the country,” her father muttered angrily moments before the riders reached them.

Each wore a common man’s dress of long coat and breeches, and a sheath dangling from his hip. Three of the riders held back, creating a line of brawn and steel as they drew their swords behind one whom Abby guessed was the leader. The four men were outnumbered at least five to one. If her kin attacked, the escorts’ meager swords would offer them little aid.

For a moment, no one spoke a word while Abby tilted her head up to have a view of the mounted men. She could sense the thick tension emanating from her kin and she prayed none of them, especially her brothers, did anything foolish. When she turned to the lead rider, she was amazed to find only cool arrogance in eyes the vivid green of a glade on a summer day staring back down at her. A shiver, neither hot nor cold, trickled down her spine and quickened her breath. He was terribly beautiful, arrayed in strength and deep confidence. In fact, he looked positively fearless on his snorting black destrier with sunlight radiating off his broad shoulders and setting fire to his clipped auburn locks. She squinted up at him and scowled at herself for being moved by his appearance. He was no boy, but five to ten years older than her cousins. Experience and mistrust hardened his features. Taller in the saddle than his comrades, he radiated an air of authority of one who demanded instant obedience. She looked away before he did, sensing a power in this man that challenged her. Perhaps another day, she thought, biting her tongue. She was used to intimidating warriors and she wasn’t afraid of him, but she wouldn’t foolishly provoke him in front of her kin and get him killed.

“I am General Daniel Marlow of Her Majesty the Queen’s Royal Army.” His voice fell in deep, rich tones around her ears.

“And knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.”

Her cousin Malcolm stepped forward. Malcolm had traveled to England on a number of occasions and must have heard of him.

“And also the Earl of Darlington, aye?” Adam added. Everyone there from her clan, including Abby, turned to offer Adam a surprised look that he would know such things.

So, her escort was a general, an earl, and a knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter? Abby gave him another looking over, deciding as her eyes lingered on his booted legs and muscular thighs, his rigid posture in the saddle, the sun gleaming off his head, and the long broadsword dangling from his hip that he indeed resembled a knight.

“That’s correct,” he answered, sounding bored before he set his eyes on her again. “Miss Abigail MacGregor?”

Her blood heated her veins and rushed to her heart. Her knees went weak beneath her and, not for the first time since Queen Anne’s letter had reached them, she wished her kinsmen were escorting her.

Her father stepped forward. “I am clan chief Robert MacGregor of the MacGregors of Skye. Her father.”

General Marlow turned his head and simply nodded at her father. Abby narrowed her eyes on him. She wasn’t used to seeing anyone show her father so little respect.

“Is this the girl?” he asked, turning back to her, his expression darkening on her Highland attire. His distaste was obvious. He didn’t like Highlanders, or mayhap it was Jacobites he had an aversion to. Either way, she didn’t like him either. Knight or not.

This trip wasn’t going to be pleasant.

REVIEW: This is book three in The MacGregors: Highland Heirs series. My first thought upon finishing this story was … WOW! And here’s why.

The heroine, Abby MacGregor, was smart and intuitive. She was possessed of a strong will and sharp mind, love for and loyalty to, her family. You just can’t help but like someone like that.

Daniel however, I had a problem with, but I did warm up to the man as I got to know him better as the story moved along. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place! This knight had so much to deal with and hard choices to make that even King Solomon wouldn’t want to be him!

As a couple, Abby and Daniel were a match made in heaven, although they didn’t think so at the beginning.

This is a well written romance with complex characters and political intrigue at the heart of it. Because of its multiple plots, this is a story worth taking your time in reading. It made me think, wonder and appreciate the mind behind its telling.

But what I love most about Paula Quinn’s books is how seamlessly she incorporates real historical characters with her fiction ones. They all become real, and you are drawn to all of them.

REVIEW: This is the second book in Paula Quinn’s new series The MacGregors: Highland Heirs and if you are an Outlander fan, you’ll love this series. Its setting is around the start of 18th Century [a ways off the Culloden 1743 rising], but you still have the same contentious and turbulent life in the Scottish Highlands.

This is the adventure of a young woman who is actively seeking one and a man who will give it to her.

Caitrina Grant is restless and is in a need of an adventure so when the opportunity shows itself, she grabs it whole heartedly not knowing quite where it would take her.

Alexander Kidd, witty, handsome and very dangerous pirate, is on a mission on the Isle of Skye and means to get it over with as soon as possible then sail off in search of a treasure, following the map his father had left him. I loved them both. He was such a charming and witty rogue and she was an innocent and inquisitive lass who knew love when it came-a-calling.

Honestly, if anyone can take two totally different and opposing characters and have them fall in love, it’s Paula Quinn! This story is chock full of adventure and drama, danger and passionate romance but I have to admit that it’s the dialogue between the two that I enjoyed the best.

Another ‘no holds barred’ well written and richly populated novel from the author that knows her craft and is happy to share her talent with us. If you love pirate stories, Paula Quinn delivers it and I have no doubt that you’ll enjoy this high seas adventure as much as our heroine did.
