‘Snowbound at Christmas’ by Debbie Mason

sac dmSTORY: Surviving the holidays will take a Christmas miracle…

Ex-cop Cat O’Connor is bored working for her sister, Chloe, as a personal assistant on the set of her soap opera. Until Chloe gets an opportunity to audition for the role of a lifetime and asks her identical twin to substitute for her on the soap with no one the wiser. It’s a perfect switch—until Cat attracts the attention of the mysterious Mr. Tall, Dark, and Way-too-handsome leading man.

Grayson Alexander never thought being snowbound in the charming town of Christmas, Colorado, for the holiday would get so hot. But between working with sexy, tough Cat on set and keeping his real reason for being there under wraps, he’s definitely feeling the heat. And if there’s one thing they’ll learn as they bring out the mistletoe, it’s that in this town, true love is always in season…

REVIEW: Cat O’Connor used to work for the Denver Police Department but is now working for her twin sister, Chloe, as her security guard and all around hand-maiden. Chloe is a star on the soap opera “As the Sun Sets” and is a total diva. She has always been a hypochondriac and even though Chloe has been quite nasty to her at times, Cat has always felt responsible for taking care of her. But Chloe’s demands have become so ridiculous that Cat is ready to quit working for her. What at first appears as an accident on set then proves to be intentional, has Cat changing her mind. Someone is out to harm her sister. Suspicion points as a possibility Chloe’s co-star who is jealous that Chloe has the starring role. But Cat’s background places her as a possible suspect as well. As it happens, Cat’s ex-fiance with whom she had lived, was caught and charged with a Ponzi scheme. Although Cat swears that she knew nothing about it, some people don’t believe her.

Special Agent Grayson Alexander is burned out from his job and wants to take a vacation. But when his grandmother gets kicked out of yet another nursing home, he is the only one in the family willing to take her in. Grandmother is another diva who tends to drive her relatives nuts. At the same time, Grayson receives a call to work undercover on the set of “As the Sun Sets” because someone appears to be trying to murder Chloe and they need his help.

Grayson and Cat are both trying to find out who has it in for Chloe but they tend to constantly butt heads. With the holiday season approaching, the cast has moved filming to Cat and Chloe’s hometown of Christmas and the O’Connor family ranch. When dangerous incidences continue to occur, Grayson and Cat are drawn closer trying to find out who wishes Chloe harm. However, this closeness can’t help but spark an attraction between them. Where will that lead and will they be able to keep Chloe safe?

This was a cute novel with bits of humor here and there. I’m sure it will be a book that many readers will want to read sitting by a warm fireplace.

EXCERPT:

He withdrew only enough to break their kiss and laughed softly against her lips. “Here, las,” his sensual sorcerer’s voice drifted deep into her soul. “Like this.”

Slipping his hand behind her nape, he tilted her head to take him at a better angle. He snatched away her breath again, covering her mouth with his in an intoxicating combination of tenderness and strength. He parted her lips gently and slid his tongue inside her.

Her nipples grew tight and hard against the confines of her gown.

Just a flick across the darkest recesses of her mouth and then gone again, over and over, devouring her until she groaned as something hot and tight twisted her innards and between her legs.

But this was no time to cower at the power he possessed. She was no mouse and followed his lead, doing what he did, matching his ardor with an unleashed passion of her own.

When his kisses fell to her throat, she tossed back her head and growled… No, that wasn’t her.

It was Gascon.

Taming-of-Malcolm-Grant-Launch-Day-Blitz

REVIEW: With this book, Highland Heirs series is now on the fourth installment and as the previous three, I loved it a lot, possibly making this one my favorite of the four and the reason for it was the heroine, Emma.

What a wonderful character she was!

She is one fierce and fiercely independent woman; an intelligent and capable healer and beautiful from within as much as out.

And then there’s Malcolm! I loved the complexity of his character. This was not your run of the mill Highland hero. He was flawed; stubborn and arrogant, yet honorable. But what made him so endearing to me was his honesty with himself. Like I said, this is one very complicated man.

As for the chemistry between these two? It was off the charts!

If you’re in the mood for a fast paced, well plotted and written Highland adventure with two very complex and entertaining protagonists, you need to read this story.

Spotlight on Lavinia Kent and ‘Sarah’s Surrender’!

ss lkBOOK BLURB: Five years ago, Miss Sarah Swilp had been deeply in love with Jonathan Perry, the second son of an earl. But when Jonathan inherited his aunt’s lands and money, he turned cold, demanding Sarah’s maidenhood and uttering those unforgettably cruel words: “You do know I won’t marry you.” She refused, of course, and that spoiled everything. Now, just as she’s agreed to a marriage of convenience, Jonathan reappears—and after Sarah gets one look at his lean, hard body, the embers of desire burst back into flame.

Over time, Jonathan has learned quite a bit about the art of pleasure—though nothing has ever given him so much joy as the husky timbre of Sarah’s laugh. It had hurt to leave her, but what other choice did he have? Perhaps he’d been too afraid of ending up like his brother, targeted by a woman seeking a title. Seeing her again, Jonathan can’t help wondering what might have been if only Sarah had surrendered to red-hot lust. Fortunately, judging by the wicked look in her eyes, it may not be too late to find out.

Sarah’s Surrender is intended for mature audiences.

TEASER:

Mr. Meyers had been right. She did have no choice. She’d been so foolish to pretend she did, to hope that a knight might show up at the last moment and save her.

She took one step down, ignoring the urge to see if Jonathan was still watching her.

Mr. Meyers was not so bad. He had all his teeth. He wasn’t mean, or at least she didn’t think he was. These things were hard to tell from public appearance. Papa had taught her that.

Another step.

And he wanted to marry her. She wasn’t quite sure why, although she rather thought he liked the fact that she had no choice, that she would be forced to always be grateful to him. And he thought she was obedient. Papa was always telling his friends how good she was at doing whatever was demanded. If only he knew the truth—but perhaps it was best that he didn’t.

She hadn’t liked the look Mr. Meyers got on his face at Papa’s words, but what choice did she have?

And he liked her breasts. There was no mistaking that.

Another step. Keep ignoring Jonathan. Perhaps he wasn’t even there anymore. No, don’t think about him.

Think only of Mr. Meyers.

How did you tell a man you were now willing to marry him?

She braced her shoulders. You just did it. It was no different than most of life. You just did it.

How many things had she done just because there was no choice?

Too many to even begin to count.

She should be well practiced by now. It should not be this hard.

Only it was.

She’d had dreams, so many dreams. And none of them had included marrying a man her papa’s age, a man who clearly would never regard her as a person, let alone someone special.

Perhaps she was misjudging him. He must hold her in some esteem if he wanted to marry her.

Three more steps down.

She could do this.

There was no choice.

She hurried down the remaining steps and without giving herself time to think positioned herself a few feet from Mr. Meyers.

She felt his eyes fall upon her, felt the icy flicker as his gaze swept up the green gown and stopped at her chest.

Pulling a deep breath in, she let her breasts swell against the bodice.

He licked his lips, glanced once at her face, and then turned and walked away.

A cold knot formed in her belly.

REVIEW: I am such a huge fan of this author but for some reason she’s writing now this genre that I’m just not a fan of. I love her prose, her characterization and her plots. They are interesting and entertaining and the dialogue is wonderful, BUT then comes the explicit, erotic stuff, and I am put-off. Especially the BDSM stuff. I’m not into it so you may think I didn’t like this read, yet I’m going to surprise you and tell you I liked it a lot. I just skipped all the explicit sex parts.

Am I recommending it? Of course I am! To all my bookworms that are into the BDSM and erotica, you’ll love this one very much, and for all those that are not, you’ll still like the set up and the journey these two go through in order to be together.

LaviniaKentAUTHOR BIO: Lavinia Kent never knew that most people don’t make up stories in their heads to pass the time. She still has a hard time understanding how those who don’t survive the doctor’s waiting room or a grocery store line without another world to escape into.

Growing up in New York state and Wisconsin, Lavinia graduated from Wellesley College and, for reasons that are still not quite clear, also holds an MBA from Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown University. Lavinia has remained in Washington ever since.

She lives under the gracious (and usually benign) rule of Erzsebet, the cat, along with her husband, three children, one cockatiel, two rats, and Erzsebet’s younger, subordinate tomcat, otherwise known as The Golden Snitch.

As the mother of three, Lavinia finds “leisure time” to be ever-elusive, but when she is not reading romance novels, she watches far too much HBO and reality television. It must also be noted that she has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Buffy and Doctor Who.

Lavinia was a two-term president of the Washington Romance Writers and is proud to be a four-time Romance Writers of America Golden Heart nominee.

‘Love Forevermore’ by Madeline Baker

lf mbSTORY: The West — it had been Loralee’s dream for as long as she could remember, and Indians were the most fascinating part of the wildly beautiful frontier she imagined. But when Loralee arrived at Fort Apache as the new schoolmarm, she had some hard realities to learn…and a harsh taskmaster to teach her.

Shad Zuniga was fiercely proud, aloof, a renegade Apache who wanted no part of the white man’s world, not even its women. Yet Loralee was driven to seek him out, compelled to join him in a forbidden union, forced to become an outcast for one slim chance at Love Forevermore.

REVIEW: Once in a while, I’ll venture out of my comfy regency ‘zone’ and stumble on a real ‘gem’ of a book. This is the case with LOVE FOREVERMORE.

Our hero Shad is an Indian in love with Loralee, a white school teacher whose sweet demeanor attracts Shad and takes him on the road to an HEA that is fraught with many obstacles and much pain.

The author has done an outstanding job in portraying the prejudices of the time so realistically that it will take your breath away. When I read romance novels, this is what I like to see. Sacrifice rewarded by true love triumph.

Mini spoiler alert: Without giving much away, I do think that some readers might get turned off by the adultery in this story, and to them I say, please be patient and try to see this story from all angles and don’t judge it so harshly. Ms. Baker handled the subject with care, and I’m so glad to have read it and recommend it highly.

‘Lady of Seduction’ by Laurel McKee

los lmckSTORY: It’s a mad, ill-advised journey that leads the usually sensible Lady Caroline Blacknall to the legendary isle of Muirin Inish, off the windswept coast of Ireland. Even so, she doesn’t expect to find herself shipwrecked and then rescued by a man she believed she would never see again. A man who, long ago, held her life in his hands . . . and with it, her heart.

Reformed rake Sir Grant Dunmore knew he could never forget the beautiful woman he once endangered nor will he ever forgive himself. But history seems doomed to repeat itself, for as long as Caroline stays on the island, she is trapped in a secret plot that could forever free Ireland—or turn deadly for all. And yet, now that she is in his arms again, how can he dream of ever letting her go?

REVIEW: Caroline Blacknall is a young widow on a quest. She’s in a search of a rare copy of ‘The Chronicle of Kildare’. She knows Grant has it, but can she talk him into giving it to her, so that at last she’ll be able to finish the book she always dreamed of writing?

Sir Grant Dunmore was known to the ton as one of the most charming and sought after bachelors in London. It only took him one night and one mistake to forever burn bridges and be alienated from everything he worked hard to get. That night, he realized that what he needed and what he worked hard to get were not one and the same. The road to redemption will be hard, but will it pay at the end?

This is the third book in a Daughters of Erin series, and I recommend you read the other two first. I’ve fallen in love with this setting and place, which is the early 1800s in Ireland. Caroline’s story is the last one in the series, but her happily-forever-after story had begun in the second book when she first met her hero. Without reading it, you may not get the feel of angst that Grant is experiencing in this book.

As all three books in this series, I just couldn’t put it down. From the first page to the last, we’re drawn into Caroline’s adventure and follow her as she discovers all of Grant’s secrets; but most of all, we watch this young woman come into her own.

Page after page, we’re intrigued by the suspense of this tale, and we slowly start forgiving this hero; but only his forgiveness to himself will set him free. If you’re looking for a strong heroine and a fearless hero, and a tale full of suspense, action, and romance galore, LADY OF SEDUCTION will fulfill all of those requirements!

‘Texas Bride’ by Joan Johnston

tb jjSTORY: He May Be Her Only Hope. She May Be His Last Chance

Miranda Wentworth never imagined becoming a mail-order bride. Now marriage to a stranger is her only hope of finding a home where she and her two younger brothers can escape the brutality of the Chicago orphanage where they live. With any luck, she can even start a family of her own, once the three of them are settled at Jacob Creed’s Texas ranch. But Miranda has one gigantic concern: Her husband-to-be knows nothing about the brothers she’s bringing along. What if he calls off the deal when he discovers the trick she’s played on him?

Jake Creed is hanging on to his Texas ranch by his fingernails. His nemesis, Alexander Blackthorne, is determined to ruin him. Jake will never give up, but he’s in desperate trouble. His wife died six months ago in childbirth, along with their stillborn son, and his two-year-old daughter needs a mother. The advertisement Jake wrote never mentioned his daughter—or the fact that he has no intention of consummating his marriage. He’s determined never to subject another wife to the burden of pregnancy. But Jake doesn’t count on finding his bride so desirable. He doesn’t count on aching with need when she joins him in bed. And he never suspected his bride would have plans of her own to seduce him.

REVIEW: WARNING! Gushing ahead!!!

Without a doubt, this is a character-driven story which, combined with fast pace and more than one couple to root for, will take you on a journey of self discovery for all characters. Ms. Johnston made sure that her writing was so good that as a reader, I just ‘wanted’! This multidimensional story left me laughing, crying, and definitely wanting more.

I wanted to know about all the kids that were left behind, and I wanted to know what happened to Jake’s father. I adored this book so much that as soon as I was done with it, I wanted to know more about Jake’s mother and her second husband. I NEEDED to know more, so off I went and bought all of the books connected to this dynamic and dynastic family.

I am all in knots waiting for WYOMING BRIDE (Hannah’s story), MONTANA BRIDE (Hetty’s story) and BLACKTHORNE’S BRIDE (Josie’s story). I am not a patient person, so I’m reading all her books while waiting for these to hit the shelves or my Kindle.

‘Lord Midnight’ by Donna Cummings

lm dcSTORY: Gabriel DeVault, a dashing highwayman, lives to avenge himself against the uncle who stole his title and tried to kill him as a child. One night’s robbery yields unexpected riches when his uncle’s spirited bride-to-be falls into Gabriel’s arms. Now his plans for vengeance include seduction of the innocent miss, in the home that once was his own.

Marisa Dunsmore is blackmailed into wedding the cold and calculating Edmund DeVault, Lord Westbrook, to protect her beloved aunt. When her attempts to escape the upcoming marriage fail, she turns for help to the man she knows as Lord Midnight, entrusting him with her love, and her future.

Soon Gabriel must choose: saving the woman who stole his heart, or destroying the man who stole his life.

REVIEW: What a great story this was! We have a heroine, Marisa Dunsmore, who is betrothed to Lord Westbrook, who is the uncle to our hero, Gabriel DeVault, AKA Lord Midnight, and who is thought to be dead.

Marisa is not so happy with this forced arrangement by her father, but she has no choice if she’s to protect her aunt. As she and her brother are en route to Westbrooke Hall in order for her to spend some time with Lord Westbrooke, they are intercepted and robbed by a highwayman, and the encounter makes a lasting impression on both Marisa and Gabriel.

The romance between Gabriel and Marisa was sweet yet passionate, and the developing friendship, which, in turn, leads both to fall in love with one another, was very believable and a smart move on behalf of the author.

I’m giving this story a Top Pick rose because it’s well written with three-dimensional characters (and some secondary ones that are memorable as well), fast paced with witty dialogue, and in one word: DELICIOUS.
