Outlander – #1.12, Let’s discuss!

2015-04-27 09.44.05

This was a perfect “calm before the storm” episode and I was glad we had one of those because from here on out, it will be one emotional rollercoaster ride, so I appreciated the lull it offered. I’m sure that we all needed it. It gave us all a chance to take a deep breath and decompress and regroup after the three earlier episodes. I thought this was Jamie’s episode all the way as his character is becoming even more fleshed out and finally making Jamie a multi-dimensional character.

2015-04-27 09.44.242015-04-27 09.44.34

I loved the opening aerial shot of our twosome riding toward the Lallybroch … talking about airplanes, Claire’s age and Jamie’s apprehension about seeing his sister and her “bastard” child …

Jamie is assailed with memories of the last time he saw his home and they’re very unpleasant …

As for Jenny, I never hated her, but I never really warmed up to her in the books. Watching Laura Donnelly in the role, I’m loving the way she’s playing her. I could sympathize with her character and her attitude toward Jamie and his Sassenach wife. Just put yourself in her shoes. You’re a young woman who’s lost her father and a brother at the same time, and for the last four years left with a house and tenants to take care of. The first thing she did was to get married and secure for herself a male protection and the second was to roll up her sleeves and get to work.

By naming her son after him, it’s not his pride that she hurts but his feeling is that she’s acknowledged his part in her downfall, forevermore to be reproached by it. A lot of us keep forgetting that he’s not just young but that for the past four years he’s been on the run for his life and only had himself to worry about. Within a few months he’s fallen in love, married and trying to get a pardon so he could return to his home and take up his duties and responsibilities there. He dreads going back because of the massive guilt he feels not just for failing his sister but causing the death of a beloved father. To arrive, meet a little boy his sister proudly displays as his namesake, hurts him to the core because of the rumor he heard that this was his enemies bastard child. He had no time to process all this information and his Fraser temper rose to the fore and as such they never really stop to think before they act!

Don’t you love Sam Heughan’s style of acting?! His face expresses so many emotions in this scene!

After four years of no communication, here comes her brother with an English woman in tow and as she’s elated to see him, she’s also very hurt by the insinuation he makes about her son and her pregnancy.

And being a hotheaded Fraser she wasn’t about to take that lying down which turns her response to his return into a confrontation, rather than the welcome she was going to give him.

And by holding her ground she puts her brother on notice. While he was gone, she hadn’t only acquired children and a husband. She became a woman of strength and character and he better be aware that he now must deal with that Jenny and not the one he left behind.

2015-04-27 09.56.10

Her cattiness toward Claire I took as collateral damage in the midst of her argument with Jamie. I bet whoever brought their belongings from Castle Leoch had filled her head with all sorts of rumors about the Sassenach her beloved brother married …

2015-04-27 11.43.01 2015-04-27 11.43.06 2015-04-27 11.43.12 2015-04-27 11.43.39 2015-04-27 11.43.43 2015-04-27 11.45.03 2015-04-27 11.45.36 2015-04-27 11.45.43 2015-04-27 11.45.46IMG_6389IMG_6392IMG_6395IMG_6396IMG_6397

I’m sure that the non book readers now have a good picture of who BJR really is and what he’s capable of doing. This was an inside look into the black sadistic soul of BJR and it will only get darker …

And while everyone is talking about his full frontal, I actually thought the scene where he sticks his finger into her mouth much more disturbing. Speaking of BJR, let me pass along a piece of information that the author herself had clarified about his character.

“Black Jack Randall is not a homosexual.
He’s a pervert. He’s a sadist. He derives sexual pleasure from hurting people, but he’s not particular about the gender of a victim. (Personality, yes–gender, no.)
I see reviewers assuming that he told Jenny repeatedly to turn around, during their encounter in a flashback–and they assume it was because he’s gay. Actually (and obviously, I would have thought…), it’s because she’s looking at him and laughing, and he finds this unnerving.
If you look at his behavior throughout the book (and I emphasize book, though it’s almost the same in the show), he’s shown as attacking four people: Jenny, Jamie, Claire, and another prisoner at Fort William (who we don’t hear about in the show) named Alex.
Two men, two women–he’s an equal-opportunity sadist. However, given his position (garrison commander) and the structure of the culture he’s in, he has much easier access to male prisoners, whom he can torture at leisure.”

Personally, I never took him for one in the books and Tobias Menzies is not playing him as such.

Our Jamie is trying very hard to be a man …

He isn’t much happy when Claire reproaches him publicly in front of the servants and his family, so he pulls her for a private tête–à–tête trying to explain it to her how things should work between the two of them. I believe she understood it better after he asks her to trust him, this is his home, his land …HIS TIME ..

2015-04-27 12.49.01 2015-04-27 12.49.49

OMG! I loved Ian! What a gentle , thoughtful and kind soul he is. And like he says, his disability isn’t slowing him down … much 🙂

Claire and Jamie moving into the Laird’s bedchamber gave us another look into how much he revered his father and the home he grew up in…

2015-04-27 12.49.52 2015-04-27 12.49.56 2015-04-27 12.50.07 2015-04-27 12.50.11 2015-04-27 12.50.19 2015-04-27 12.50.56 2015-04-27 12.51.42 2015-04-27 12.51.53

The scene in which he digs up the sword under his father’s bed, then telling Claire how he dreamed of it being his one day, was so touching. She tells him it his his and he turns to her and says … Ours, she nods her head and repeats it after him …Ours.

By asking him when was the last time he saw his father she never expected to hear about the flogging he endured, and this time it was from his point of view.

2015-04-27 12.52.21 2015-04-27 12.52.41

Right before he got flogged for the second time in a week, unbeknownst to him, his father came to talk to BJR and as he was leaving, the soldiers were bringing him in to see BJR. In that small, cramped corridor of the fortress, he is shocked, embarrassed even, to see his father. The first thing he asks is what are you doing here Father? He starts apologising for the mess he caused, but his father won’t hear of it.

2015-04-27 12.52.55 2015-04-27 12.52.59

I was glad that this episode established more firmly the relationships between many characters, especially Brian and Jamie’s. I was crying as I watched this father trying to encourage his son with everything at his disposal, but that kiss on the cheek did me in. We see that everything that Jamie was, is and will be, is because of the mutual love between the father and a son.

2015-04-27 12.53.02 2015-04-27 12.53.11 2015-04-27 12.53.17 2015-04-27 12.53.21

How hard was that to do and receive in front of these soldiers?! And what would have happened if he never kissed him?! The last thing he heard his father say to him was …

“You’re a braw lad.”

Telling Claire of his conversation and an indecent proposal he got from BJR was hard for him, but I also saw his relief that he had someone to confide in.

Opening up about his decision to not surrender his body to BJR … although …he does say this “…so …so … I considered it …” but he never accepted the offer because he could still feel the print of his father’s lips on his cheek!

Claire’s heart breaks for her man and she runs into his arms to give some comfort …

To say that this wasn’t Claire’s episode is not quite right. She may not have been in every frame, but she did have some great moments with Jamie, Jenny, Ian and even some tenants.

I loved that we see Jamie struggle with his identity. He tries very hard to fit in, be someone he thought his father would want him to be. We, as Claire, now know that Jamie is much more than the stable boy we all assumed he was. He is yet to become the “King of Men” as we all dubbed him, but he’s well on his way …

Coming to their room drunk and waking her up, she’s not happy, but even after she pushes him off her, she smiles … She is becoming used to their marriage and his home is becoming hers …

Poor Jenny! Watching Jenny’s face as she finally sees her brother’s scars as he emerges out of the pond was such an emotional and poignant moment that finally brings to home to her how much he’s suffered and finally realizes how viciously he was beaten …

“Jennie, please turn ’round while I’m tryin’ to get out b’fore my cock snaps off.”

Poor Jamie … sigh … when will he ever catch a break? 😉

It’s late at night at Lallybroch and Claire and Ian are night owls, so they have a frank conversation about the Fraser’s they’re married to …

What follows is a long overdue conversation between two people who love each other unconditionally. The guilt both carried through the years of separation is admitted, but also vanquished and laid at the feet of only one man who brought them so much pain, Black Jack.

Of course, my favorite was the declaration of love at the end of the episode and I thought that it was perfectly executed. It was fun and sweet, yet tender and poignant.

Telling her exactly when he knew that she was meant for him, the moment he wanted her and the moment he knew he loved her was very touching and Claire knew that this declaration needed to be answered with her own.

I realize that I’m not a big fan of cliffhangers … 😦

2015-04-27 18.09.15

All in all, this was an episode that showed us that our Jamie is flawed and funny when drunk; Claire needed to learn not to reprimand her husband in front of their family and servants but in private; Jenny might have a soft heart, but we only saw her hard head; not all the neighbors are nice as shown by the cliffhanger ending.

So what did you like/dislike/hate/love? Are you ready for what’s coming?
