Outlander – #1.12, Let’s discuss!

2015-04-27 09.44.05

This was a perfect “calm before the storm” episode and I was glad we had one of those because from here on out, it will be one emotional rollercoaster ride, so I appreciated the lull it offered. I’m sure that we all needed it. It gave us all a chance to take a deep breath and decompress and regroup after the three earlier episodes. I thought this was Jamie’s episode all the way as his character is becoming even more fleshed out and finally making Jamie a multi-dimensional character.

2015-04-27 09.44.242015-04-27 09.44.34

I loved the opening aerial shot of our twosome riding toward the Lallybroch … talking about airplanes, Claire’s age and Jamie’s apprehension about seeing his sister and her “bastard” child …

Jamie is assailed with memories of the last time he saw his home and they’re very unpleasant …

As for Jenny, I never hated her, but I never really warmed up to her in the books. Watching Laura Donnelly in the role, I’m loving the way she’s playing her. I could sympathize with her character and her attitude toward Jamie and his Sassenach wife. Just put yourself in her shoes. You’re a young woman who’s lost her father and a brother at the same time, and for the last four years left with a house and tenants to take care of. The first thing she did was to get married and secure for herself a male protection and the second was to roll up her sleeves and get to work.

By naming her son after him, it’s not his pride that she hurts but his feeling is that she’s acknowledged his part in her downfall, forevermore to be reproached by it. A lot of us keep forgetting that he’s not just young but that for the past four years he’s been on the run for his life and only had himself to worry about. Within a few months he’s fallen in love, married and trying to get a pardon so he could return to his home and take up his duties and responsibilities there. He dreads going back because of the massive guilt he feels not just for failing his sister but causing the death of a beloved father. To arrive, meet a little boy his sister proudly displays as his namesake, hurts him to the core because of the rumor he heard that this was his enemies bastard child. He had no time to process all this information and his Fraser temper rose to the fore and as such they never really stop to think before they act!

Don’t you love Sam Heughan’s style of acting?! His face expresses so many emotions in this scene!

After four years of no communication, here comes her brother with an English woman in tow and as she’s elated to see him, she’s also very hurt by the insinuation he makes about her son and her pregnancy.

And being a hotheaded Fraser she wasn’t about to take that lying down which turns her response to his return into a confrontation, rather than the welcome she was going to give him.

And by holding her ground she puts her brother on notice. While he was gone, she hadn’t only acquired children and a husband. She became a woman of strength and character and he better be aware that he now must deal with that Jenny and not the one he left behind.

2015-04-27 09.56.10

Her cattiness toward Claire I took as collateral damage in the midst of her argument with Jamie. I bet whoever brought their belongings from Castle Leoch had filled her head with all sorts of rumors about the Sassenach her beloved brother married …

I’m sure that the non book readers now have a good picture of who BJR really is and what he’s capable of doing. This was an inside look into the black sadistic soul of BJR and it will only get darker …

And while everyone is talking about his full frontal, I actually thought the scene where he sticks his finger into her mouth much more disturbing. Speaking of BJR, let me pass along a piece of information that the author herself had clarified about his character.

“Black Jack Randall is not a homosexual.
He’s a pervert. He’s a sadist. He derives sexual pleasure from hurting people, but he’s not particular about the gender of a victim. (Personality, yes–gender, no.)
I see reviewers assuming that he told Jenny repeatedly to turn around, during their encounter in a flashback–and they assume it was because he’s gay. Actually (and obviously, I would have thought…), it’s because she’s looking at him and laughing, and he finds this unnerving.
If you look at his behavior throughout the book (and I emphasize book, though it’s almost the same in the show), he’s shown as attacking four people: Jenny, Jamie, Claire, and another prisoner at Fort William (who we don’t hear about in the show) named Alex.
Two men, two women–he’s an equal-opportunity sadist. However, given his position (garrison commander) and the structure of the culture he’s in, he has much easier access to male prisoners, whom he can torture at leisure.”

Personally, I never took him for one in the books and Tobias Menzies is not playing him as such.

Our Jamie is trying very hard to be a man …

He isn’t much happy when Claire reproaches him publicly in front of the servants and his family, so he pulls her for a private tête–à–tête trying to explain it to her how things should work between the two of them. I believe she understood it better after he asks her to trust him, this is his home, his land …HIS TIME ..

OMG! I loved Ian! What a gentle , thoughtful and kind soul he is. And like he says, his disability isn’t slowing him down … much 🙂

Claire and Jamie moving into the Laird’s bedchamber gave us another look into how much he revered his father and the home he grew up in…

2015-04-27 12.49.52 2015-04-27 12.49.56 2015-04-27 12.50.07 2015-04-27 12.50.11 2015-04-27 12.50.19 2015-04-27 12.50.56 2015-04-27 12.51.42 2015-04-27 12.51.53

The scene in which he digs up the sword under his father’s bed, then telling Claire how he dreamed of it being his one day, was so touching. She tells him it his his and he turns to her and says … Ours, she nods her head and repeats it after him …Ours.

By asking him when was the last time he saw his father she never expected to hear about the flogging he endured, and this time it was from his point of view.

2015-04-27 12.52.21 2015-04-27 12.52.41

Right before he got flogged for the second time in a week, unbeknownst to him, his father came to talk to BJR and as he was leaving, the soldiers were bringing him in to see BJR. In that small, cramped corridor of the fortress, he is shocked, embarrassed even, to see his father. The first thing he asks is what are you doing here Father? He starts apologising for the mess he caused, but his father won’t hear of it.

2015-04-27 12.52.55 2015-04-27 12.52.59

I was glad that this episode established more firmly the relationships between many characters, especially Brian and Jamie’s. I was crying as I watched this father trying to encourage his son with everything at his disposal, but that kiss on the cheek did me in. We see that everything that Jamie was, is and will be, is because of the mutual love between the father and a son.

2015-04-27 12.53.02 2015-04-27 12.53.11 2015-04-27 12.53.17 2015-04-27 12.53.21

How hard was that to do and receive in front of these soldiers?! And what would have happened if he never kissed him?! The last thing he heard his father say to him was …

“You’re a braw lad.”

Telling Claire of his conversation and an indecent proposal he got from BJR was hard for him, but I also saw his relief that he had someone to confide in.

I loved that we see Jamie struggle with his identity. He tries very hard to fit in, be someone he thought his father would want him to be. We, as Claire, now know that Jamie is much more than the stable boy we all assumed he was. He is yet to become the “King of Men” as we all dubbed him, but he’s well on his way …

Coming to their room drunk and waking her up, she’s not happy, but even after she pushes him off her, she smiles … She is becoming used to their marriage and his home is becoming hers …

I realize that I’m not a big fan of cliffhangers … 😦

2015-04-27 18.09.15

All in all, this was an episode that showed us that our Jamie is flawed and funny when drunk; Claire needed to learn not to reprimand her husband in front of their family and servants but in private; Jenny might have a soft heart, but we only saw her hard head; not all the neighbors are nice as shown by the cliffhanger ending.

So what did you like/dislike/hate/love? Are you ready for what’s coming?

‘The Royal We’ by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

trw hc jmSTORY: “I might be Cinderella today, but I dread who they’ll think I am tomorrow. I guess it depends on what I do next.”

American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it’s Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain’s future king. And when Bex can’t resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face.

Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick’s sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he’s fated to become.

Which is how she gets into trouble.

Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she’s sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing.

REVIEW: The story begins in Autumn of 2007 when Rebecca (Bex) Porter arrives in England from America to take art classes at Oxford.  She is immediately immersed with lots of fun students including Heartthrob Heir Nicholas (Nick), Prince of Wales.  Of course, Bex is intrigued by Nick and finds him as handsome as she has ever heard, but does her best not to pant after him.

Bex had left her twin sister, Lacey, back in the U.S. attending medical school which had been Lacey’s dream.  It was difficult for them to be apart from each other as they had always been so close. However, she dives right in with her new friends and participates in all of the drinking games and fun activities which is part of the Oxford scene.

Bex and Nick soon become friends and spend lots of time in her room watching American DVDs and just relaxing.  Nick has his bodyguards close by but the press has agreed to not pester him while at Oxford in exchange for occasional interviews with Nick and his brother, ginger-haired and fun-loving Freddie.

Before long, Bex and Nick start to date and become lovers.  Trying to keep their relationship from the press becomes more and more difficult.  However, with the help of their friends and Freddie, they manage to have a relationship.  Soon, Lacey sees what her sister is enjoying and decides to chuck it all and join her.  Happy as Bex is to see her, her presence soon causes big problems.

Pressure from the royal family and the press continues to build which makes it very hard for them.  The Family feels that an American is just not the person Nick needs to marry.

We see how they party really hard while hiding from the spotlight of the press.  The stress of maintaining their love while the royal family tries to freeze Bex out leaving her on the sidelines watching Nick as he performs his duties and interacts with beautiful girls, slowly begins to break Bex’s heart.

As the years pass, Bex and Nick work at maintaining their relationship and love but find it very difficult to do.  However, they are finally engaged and a wedding is planned which blossoms into even more problems.

Will they be able to overcome the odds and finally be married?

As the world awaits the birth of William and Kate’s second baby, this book was published at the perfect time.  Followers of William and Kate will love this novel.

‘The Duke of Andelot’ by Delilah Marvelle

tdoa dmSTORY: For some, unraveling love takes a lifetime…

Long before becoming the flamboyant courtesan known to men as Madame de Maitenon, Thérèse Angelique Bouchard, dreamed of becoming an actress capable of commanding not only the stage but all of Paris. Until she meets an extraordinary aristocratic gentleman who sweeps her into his arms and the danger of his life, while offering her the sort of wealth she never imagined. What starts off as a seductive alliance, ends in her giving him the one thing she, as a mere bourgeoisie, cannot afford to give: her love.

After the murder of his older brothers, Gérard Antoine Tolbert, becomes the last heir to the powerful dukedom of Andelot, leaving him to fight for not only his life, but the allegiance he holds for the crown. During the final rise of the French Revolution that whispers of the violent change about to shake the entire country, Gérard meets an aspiring actress who entices him into wanting more out of not only himself but life. In trying to protect her from their overly passionate alliance and those that want him dead, he must decide what matters most: his life or his heart.

REVIEW: Delilah Marvelle’s romance stories have always had a heart besides being unbelievably sensual and sweet all at the same time. This one had taken the sensuality just a bit further and made this story too erotically charged for me. That however had not stopped me from enjoying this wonderful story told from both points of view of our hero and heroine.

After six books, The School of Gallantry series is at an end and we finally get the story of its Mistress.

I actually loved that Ms. Marvelle dedicated a good chunk of this book to the back story of both, Therese and Gerard. Because of it, both of their characters were well-developed and by the time I had entered into the “present” telling of the story, I was well invested in finding out the end.

The story starts with young Therese making a life altering decision to take flight from her home, therefore escaping a marriage to an old man her father had ordered her to do, and she’s excited to reach Paris and her cousin so she can start her acting career. Along the way she muses about her life and her ambitions while at the same time getting lost. After two days of wandering about, she encounters a rider on a magnificent horse, all dressed up as a highwayman. Surmising that she’s better off asking this man for directions, than wondering around and risking being tracked by her family, she stops and asks him if she’s on the right road to Paris.

And the rest, as they say, is history and what a history it is.

If you love second chance at love tropes, than you’ll like reading this story, but you’ll also appreciate the historical aspect of it as well. Throughout the story Ms. Marvelle seamlessly weaves the most terrifying and ugly part of French history, yet through wonderful dialogue and inner thoughts of her main characters, she still manages to make me chuckle from time to time.

That said, I’d like to warn you all non-erotica bookworms. I wouldn’t want you to miss out on an entertaining and at times sweet love story because of a handful of paragraphs, so do what I do when faced with the same problem: skim through those parts. Trust me, it’ll be worth it in the end.

‘The Daring Exploits of a Runaway Heiress’ by Victoria Alexander

tdeoarh vaSTORY: To Do:
Swim naked in the moonlight
Play in a high stakes card game
Ride an elephant
Be painted sans clothing.
Take a lover…

Lucy Merryweather has inherited a fortune—and her great-aunt’s list of unfulfilled wishes. What better way to honor her memory than by accomplishing as many of them as possible? And with Lucy’s family an ocean away in New York, nothing stands in her way—if one ignores the private investigator hired to spy on her.

Yet Cameron Effington is infuriatingly difficult to ignore…

As a reporter, Cameron is always looking for a good story. An American heiress running rampant between Millworth Manor and Mayfair is the perfect subject. Not to mention captivating. And extremely kissable. And if Lucy believes he’s a detective? Well, the truth should never get in the way of a good story—or hinder delicious, impetuous passion…

REVIEW: January 1888 – Millworth Manor

Lucinda (Lucy) Merryweather is an American young woman who was named for her great-aunt and who received a fortune from her aunt left to her on her 21st birthday.  She is the daughter of a director of Graham, Merryweather, and Lockwood Banking and Trust of New York.  An intelligent and outgoing person, Lucy found a list of things that her great-aunt wish to do but never got to so Lucy has decided that she will do those things for her aunt.  To be able to spend time in London without her parents, she has hired a companion, Miss Clara West.

Cameron (Cam) Effington is the youngest son of Jonathan and Fiona, the Duke and Duchess of Roxborough.  Cameron has always wanted to write fiction but is not yet ready to write a book.  In the meantime, he has worked for Cadwallender’s Daily Messenger to gain experience with writing stories for the newspaper.  Cam’s father wants him to resign his job as he feels it is beneath him, but Cam refuses.  Cam’s father tells him that if can write a book, he can keep his job.  Now, Cam needs something to write about.

Cam knows Clara and when he meets Lucy and discovers her goal of experiencing many of her aunt’s dreams, he decides to become their friend and accompanies them on these adventures.  His idea is to write about these experiences that will give fodder for the novel he wants to write.

Thus, the adventures begin.  That is where I honestly began to get bored with this novel.  Indeed, Lucy participates in her adventures where some are rather tame and others not quite believable.  However, I am sure there are readers who will enjoy the adventures of Lucy.

‘A Good Rogue is Hard to Find’ by Kelly Bowen

agrihtf kbSTORY: He Thought He’d Seen It All . . .

The rogue’s life has been good to William Somerhall: He has his fortune, his racehorses, and his freedom. Then he moves in with his mother. It seems the eccentric Dowager Duchess of Worth has been barely skirting social disaster-assisted by one Miss Jenna Hughes, who is far too bright and beautiful to be wasting her youth as a paid companion. Now home to keep his mother from ruin, William intends to learn what’s afoot by keeping his friends close-and the tempting Miss Hughes closer still.

. . . Until He Meets Her

He’s tall, dark, and damnably intelligent-unfortunately for Jenna. She and the duchess are in the “redistribution business,” taking from the rich and giving to the poor, and it’s going great – until he shows up. But even as William plots to make an honest woman out of her, Jenna will use all her wiles to reveal just how bad a rogue he can be . . .

REVIEW: London, June 1817

William (Will) Somerhall, the Duke of Worth, has a reputation as a complete rogue.  He owns Breckenridge estate and runs it well, but his main interest is horse racing.

Will’s mother, Eleanor, the Dower Duchess of Worth lives in the Dower House on his estate.  Will avoids visiting her as she has become known as being extremely eccentric.  Unable to say no again to her many invitations, he agrees to attend a dinner party but arrives late to find total chaos.  Chickens are running around the house and his mother has a pet python she has named Phillip.

Will is introduced to his mother companion, Jenna Hughes.  He is immediately smitten with her as she is the same woman he met at a ball a year ago and disappeared before he could get to know her.  Fearing that his mother has totally taken leave of her senses, he insists that he is going to move in with her.

Ah, but Jenna and her mother have a secret that slowly starts to come to light.  The Duchess has built a very impressively large horse barn and has acquired some outstanding horseflesh.  As Will has always prided himself on being a horse expert, he is surprised to find these expensive horses.

Jenna claims to be the daughter of a now deceased surgeon and thus has good medical knowledge.  What she fails to add is that her father was a veterinary surgeon.  When the Duchess first met Jenna, she was extremely impressed with her knowledge of horses and immediately hired her to be her “companion.”  However, she is much more than that.  Jenna has known extreme poverty and has seen many shop owners lose their businesses due to the fact that some arrogant customers don’t even bother to pay their bills.  Thus, she is on a mission to change that and, hopefully, get a law introduced into the House of Lords where people will be forced to pay their bills.

As Jenna and Will become attracted to one another and Will learns more about her plans, he is quite intrigued to join with her to help in her campaign.

The unique way in which Jenna and the Duchess have schemed to help the poor and carry on with the horse racing is knitted together beautifully in this book.  The plot is quite different from what I’ve read before and I must say that the author has a fabulous imagination.  I enjoyed the novel very much and look forward to reading more from Kelly Bowen.

This novel does not publish until April 28, 2015.  Thus, I have tried to add as many teasers as possible without giving away any spoilers.

‘Paris, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down’ by Rosecrans Baldwin

pilbybmdSTORY: A self-described Francophile from when he was little, Rosecrans Baldwin always dreamed of living in Paris—drinking le café, eating les croissants, walking in les jardins—so when an opportunity presented itself to work for an advertising agency in Paris, he couldn’t turn it down. Despite the fact that he had no experience in advertising. And despite the fact that he barely spoke French. After an unimaginable amount of red tape and bureaucracy, Rosecrans and his wife packed up their Brooklyn apartment and left the Big Apple for the City of Light. But when they arrived, things were not eactly what Rosecrans remembered from a family vacation when he was nine years old.

Paris, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down is a nimble comic account of observing the French capital from the inside out. It is an exploration of the Paris of Sarkozy, text-message romances, smoking bans, and a McDonald’s beneath the Louvre—the story of an American who arrives loving Paris all out of proportion, but finds life there to be completely unlike what he expected. Over eighteen months, Rosecrans must rely on his dogged American optimism to get him through some very unromantic situations—at work (writing booklets on how to breast-feed, raise, and nurture children), at home (trying to finish writing his first novel in an apartment surrounded on all sides by construction workers), and at every confusing French dinner party in between. An offbeat update to the expat canon, Paris, I Love You is a book about a young man finding his preconceptions replaced by the oddities of a vigorous, nervy city—which is just what he needs to fall in love with Paris for the second time.

REVIEW: This is a delightful biography about a man and his wife who decided to move to Paris for a time and completely immerse themselves into the French culture. He worked for a French company and learned to better speak the language.

We are introduced to the French office atmosphere and work ethic, the food and total attitudes and behavior of this country.

I found it to be very educational, enlightening and funny. It brought back great memories to me from the time I lived there. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in learning more about this glorious city and its citizens.
