STORY: All of London knows the Duke of Rutherford has position and wealth. They also whisper that he’s dissolute, devilish, and determinedly unwed. So why, everyone is asking, has he hired a governess?
When Miss Lily Russell crosses the threshold of the Duke of Rutherford’s stylish townhouse, she knows she has come face to face with sensual danger. For this is no doting papa. Rather, his behavior is scandalous, and his reputation rightly earned. And his pursuit of her is nearly irresistible—but resist she must for the sake of her pupil.
As for the duke himself, it was bad enough when his unknown child landed on his doorstep. Now Lily, with her unassuming beauty, has aroused his most wicked fantasies—and, shockingly, his desire to change his wanton ways. He’s determined to become worthy of her, and so he asks for her help in correcting his behavior.
But Lily has a secret, one that, if it becomes known, could change everything . . .
REVIEW: London – 1840
Marcus, the new Duke of Rutherford is rather lost in his new role. Boredom abounds and he spends his days drinking with his friends. One day, he is presented with a young girl named Rose, who is his daughter from a liaison a few years back. His first inclination is to hire a governess.
Miss Lily Russell who works at The Quality Employment Agency that she runs with two of her friends receives the request for a governess to work for none other than a Duke! Although Lily has not actually been a governess, she is excited at the opportunity and immediately responds to the request and, to her delight, is hired for the position.
Lily and Rose bond quickly and as Marcus gets to know his daughter, he becomes smitten with her and wants to become a good father to her. Not knowing how to be a father, he enlists the help of Lily for advice in how he should go about it. He involves himself in Rose’s everyday activities which means he and Lily share in her instruction and care.
As Marcus introduces Rose to his friends as his ward, some are hesitant to welcome Rose as they believe she is a by-blow of his.
The frequent togetherness of Marcus and Lily soon results in an attraction that just cannot be denied. That is when Marcus starts to think of Lily as more than just a governess and considers making her his wife.
Will Marcus claim Rose as his own daughter? Will Marcus and Lily be able to become a couple? These questions are tough ones as one also has to ask if society will accept both Rose and Lily into the “fold.”
I adored this book! The humorous tidbits that the author inserted throughout the book will have the reader laughing out loud. This is the first novel I have read by Megan Frampton and now I’m on a quest to get more of her books.
